Gray Hair

by Norene Anderson

Gray hair is an uninvited part of life that many have to reckon with from a very young age. Generally, it starts in the 30s and continues throughout adulthood. Some people have more tendency to turn gray than others. Heredity is thought to be a big factor in the age at which graying starts and the extent to which gray occurs through the years.

One of the causes of gray hair is when the body gets in a compromised condition because of lack of needed nutrients or by having some kind of disease process take place. Some medical conditions can cause hair to turn gray. An imbalance in the hormones, particularly the thyroid, can cause premature graying. Anemia or a deficiency in vitamin B-12 is another possible cause. One of the latest reasons to be noted is the effect of smoking and gray hair.

Is Gray Hair Inevitable?

When hair turns gray, it is because the pigment or melanin is not being produced by the cells. This is a natural process in aging. If the cellular level of the body is not maintained by good nutrition or natural supplements, the aging process can begin early. Cellular restoration and rejuvenation are vital for good overall health as well as for maintaining healthy hair follicles.

Some believe that trauma or unusual stress can cause hair to rapidly turn gray. There is some controversy about how long it actually takes the process to transpire. One thing that is certain is the fact that stress affects the immune system and that in turn affects the ability of the body to rebuild adequately on the cellular level. A good nutrient to provide protection for the cells of the body will help reduce the onset of premature graying.
