However, if you are looking for brilliance of your diamond, round is the way to go.

The round diamond has the ability to be cut to allow the most brilliance. No other shape can shine like the round diamond. This does not mean, however, that other shapes do not shine. For those who haven't bought diamonds in a long time, or have never bought diamonds, you may be asking yourself this question.

The cut of a diamond is not the shape. If you come across a diamond dealer who does not know the difference, you might as well cut your own diamond! The cut causes the diamond to shine or not shine. A perfect cut will allow light to enter the diamond from the top, be tossed around the inside and exit the top. If a cut is too shallow, the light will exit the bottom. If a cut is too deep, the light will exit the side. Neither of these is desirable.

Cuts are measured in six, easy to remember categories. They are Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. For any diamond that you purchase, you should not go below the Good rating. If you do, your diamond solitaire studs will appear dull. A diamond should shine. While Ideal and Premium are obviously the best, it is not necessary to get these. You can get wonderfully brilliant diamonds with Very Good and Good cuts.
