Address Verification

Written by James Lyons

Why does a company need to perform an address verification check on a prospective employee? There are a number of reasons, one of the most basic being to check that tax information will be processed properly. Also, a person's address history can help an employer search criminal court records.

The story always seems to be the same. Some criminal left his hometown because he or she could not get a job in their old state. Every time this person interviewed for a job, the prospective employer pulled up a criminal report and disqualified the candidate. Broken and disillusioned, the former criminal moved to a new state to start over. Fortunately for the ex-con, he or she was able to find a job with company that placed little value on a background check.

The Importance of Address Verification

I don't want to give the impression that I believe former criminals should not be given a second chance. In fact, I believe society is too hard on many criminals considering how biased our legal system can be. That aside, I also believe a company has the right to know if an applicant has a criminal record. Businesses owners and executives have a right to protect their companies from potential threats.

Address verification services help build an effective criminal court record search based on the applicant's previous places of residence. This whole function should be outsourced to a company that specializes in background searches. I honestly doubt your company can perform an effective criminal background check without first performing an address verification.
