Fake Fireplaces

by Robert Mac

Fake fireplaces sound like such a Hollywood thing: pretty to look at, but, well--fake. And I should know. I lived in Hollywood for two years, and fake is everything. Fake stories, fake special effects, fake people, fake hamburgers. The whole TV and film industry is based on creating something artificial and untrue. Why would I want to continue that deception with a fake fireplace?

Fake Fireplaces Are Really Cool

"Fake" might not be the best word to describe electric fireplaces with fake logs and fake flames, because these are better than the genuine article. "Real" fireplaces are filthy, dangerous, and impractical. On the other hand, fake fireplaces are clean (no smoke or soot), safe (as safe as a stereo or other appliance), and practical (they heat when you want them to).

Fake fireplaces are really an improvement on the traditional wood-burning fireplaces. Everything that's bad has been fixed, and everything that's a plus has been saved. That's not fake--that's evolution. What would you rather have: the best of both worlds, or something that's sentimental yet possibly dangerous? It's a no-brainer.

Electric fireplaces do all the good stuff that a wood fireplace does--heat up a room, add light, create a rustic ambience--but none of the bad. You don't need a chimney, vent, bellows, kindling, or a stack of firewood. They are more efficient--no lost heat up the chimney--and more useful: you can turn the heat up, down, or even off. And if the realistic flames and logs are fake, well--you're just not ready for Hollywood.
