Fireplace Inserts

by Robert Mac

Fireplace inserts fit inside the shell of empty fireplaces to create a complete system and one that is generally more efficient than traditional fireplaces. There are three common scenarios where electric fireplace inserts, or fireboxes, should be used. You should use them within electric fireplaces, within existing wood-burning fireplaces that are being converted to electric, or in non-traditional sites, like a wall.

Fireplace Inserts Are the First Step to a Practical Fireplace

Electric fireplaces exude all the charm and coziness of traditional fireplaces, but without any of the downfalls. You'll never have to worry about chopping wood, shoveling ashes, or leaving the gas on. Fireplace inserts are the heart: they consist of realistic flames and logs which supply the "look," and unseen blowers that supply the "feel"--adjustable degrees of heat.

While they are primarily designed to fit within custom wooden or tile fireplaces, you can also put them in pre-existing gas- or wood-burning hearths and convert them into more efficient heating devices. Or, since you don't necessarily have to have them under a chimney--no fumes or smoke with electric inserts--you could put one in a wall or even a bookcase. As long as it can reach a standard outlet, you can plug it just about anywhere you'd set a lamp.

An electric fireplace insert automatically upgrades your current system, too. Aside from eliminating messy ventilation systems, they are also more efficient than combustion-based fireplaces. All of the energy of electric inserts is converted to heat and stays within the room, rather than getting expelled outside like gas- and wood-based heating.
