Unique Wedding Cake Toppers

Romantic Wedding Cakes

by Stacy Chbosky

Romantic wedding cakes are one of the most important and beloved symbols of the marriage ceremony. Romantic wedding cakes as we think of them today have been a standard in America for nearly 100 years. Before that, brides and grooms were given tiny cakes and sweets from their guests, which were heaped into a pile. This tall pile of sweet cakes eventually inspired the three-tiered wedding cake still so popular today.

Romantic Wedding Cakes: Traditional Yet Original

Having a wedding cake made of three tiers is just one of many wedding cake traditions. Other traditions include freezing the top tier of the cake to eat on the first anniversary. Many brides and grooms have made a messy tradition of playfully mashing cake into one another's mouths, instead of simply feeding it to one another. Of course, plenty of smart brides have nixed this tradition from their wedding!

Romantic wedding cakes don't have to be totally traditional, however. For instance, many couples choose unique wedding cake toppers to set on the top tier of their cakes. These can include images of fantasy, like fairy tale cake toppers, spun glass castles or dancing fairies. They can also celebrate animal images, like kissing swans, leaping dolphins or prancing horses.

Toppers are just as important as the cake itself, in my opinion. Yes, the cake is something that the guests get to taste and enjoy. The topper, however, is something that the couple can keep as a treasured heirloom. The wedding cake topper can be handed down to their children, and their children's children.
