Eucalyptus OilEucalyptus oil has been used in folk recipes to treat illness for centuries. Famous for its usefulness in relieving congestion, many leading cough and cold remedies today contain diluted amounts of eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil is also revered for its power as a natural insect repellent and dust-mite killer. Eucalyptus oil is also frequently found in joint and muscle pain remedies. And though the jury remains out on whether the fragrance is "energizing" or "calming", chances are you've never walked into a spa without taking a deep breath of eucalyptus scented air. If you've ever used a eucalyptus lotion on your chest, then you know first-hand the benefits of this ingredient against congestion. If you've used a facial cleanser with this ingredient then you're familiar with its natural antiseptic properties. Many arthritis liniments use eucalyptus oil as well, since its hot/cold sensation causes the brain to transfer attention from the pain. Eucalyptus Oil Recipes for Home RemediesEucalyptus baths are an especially nice way to enjoy this healing oil when you've got a cold. You can try blending a cup of epsom salts and a cup of sea salts with 10 to 15 drops of eucalyptus oil. Other nice oils to add to this recipe would be peppermint oil, ginger oil, or sandalwood. Keep the ratio of oil drops the same; you want about 15 to 20 drops of oil for the entire mix. Dust mites and other allergens can be eliminated from sheets, pillowcases, curtains and other washable fabrics by putting a little eucalyptus oil in the wash. Soaking small pads or cloths with this oil and placing them in cabinets and drawers is an effective, natural way to repel cockroaches and other insects. And some studies have shown that components of eucalyptus oil are as effective against mosquitoes as DEET. There are many "recipes" online for making your own repellents, cleaning and deodorizing solutions, and more. ![]() Get all Pharmacy articles via
