Free Spyware Scan

by Charles Peacock

Beware of the free spyware scan. In many cases, this turns out to be a free spyware scam that will only infect your computer with more spyware. Not every free spyware scan is bogus, however, so let's look at some ways to help you tell the difference between the good ones and the bad ones.

Assessing a Free Spyware Scan Before You Use It

Always avoid pop-up ads that offer you a free spyware scans. Almost every pop-up ad that tries to get you to click something has a devious purpose, whether it's trying to sell you something or trying to infect your computer with a virus. Pop-up ads also have the ability to use your one little click as a passport to infecting your computer, so they should be avoided at all cost.

If you come across a website that offers a free spyware scan, try to assess if it is legitimate before you bite. Lots of ads and broken links are always a bad sign, and if it seems like the site is trying too hard to get your clicks, then go elsewhere. When in doubt, you can always do an internet search on the website itself, to see if other people have had success with it.

Reading reviews and following other computer users' suggestions is always the best way to find the best programs. I will never download and open a program without finding at least two independent reviewers that recommend it. This is a fail-safe way to ensure that what you're getting is what it claims to be.
