Enterprise network security is particularly because of the nature of enterprise networks. By definition, enterprise networks are networks that tie together all of the separate systems and networks of a business or organization. This can include servers, personal computers, mainframes, printers, intranets and the Internet.

Because enterprise networks consist of so many disparate components, keeping them secure is an exceedingly difficult task. Each end-point in the network has its own peculiar requirements and vulnerabilities, and your enterprise network security system must account for all of them. It takes a great software and flexible design to make this type of security system work.

Effective enterprise network security systems must operate both at the gateway level and the client level. Your gateway is where your network is connected to the Internet or LAN or WAN subnets. This level requires a strong level of protection, such as a hardware firewall that can block all outside attacks and an alert system that keeps you updated on the health of your network.

Client-level security is for all the end-users who are connected to the network, whether they're using personal computers, laptops, wireless PDAs or printers. Security at this level has to protect against things like viruses from downloaded email attachments that can quickly spread to the rest of the network. Establishing a high level of protection on both the gateway and client level is the only way to keep your enterprise network truly secure.
