Qualities of Liturgical Dance Wear

Liturgical dance is different from performance or theatrical dance. Liturgical dancers do not need to have specific dance training in order to express themselves through praise dancing. Liturgical dancing is simply dedicated to praising God, while theatrical dance is dedicated to entertaining an audience. Therefore, the costuming for these two forms of dance is usually very different.

Liturgical dance wear is typically soft and elegant to express beauty, passion, and dedication to God. The outfits are typically loose and flowing, rather than form fitting. Liturgical dance is not about showing your body, unlike many theatrical dance notions. Liturgical items may include leotards with a high neck line, wide leg pants, ruffled tops, capes, and tunics.

Many liturgical dancers will choose to wear dance wear in certain colors as a form of symbolism. For instance, gold symbolizes deity, silver symbolizes redemption, and white symbolizes purity or holiness. Red is often worn to symbolize the blood of the savior and blue can be worn to symbolize heaven. Dancers can also use combinations of meaningful colors for liturgical dance wear and costumes.
