Casting Photos

A friend of mine is a working actress in Los Angeles. I spoke with her recently regarding the importance of casting photos or headshots. She told me she would never have signed with a talent agency, or booked a single acting gig without these photographs. In case you don't know, actor headshots are 8x10 photos, usually shot in black and white, that feature an actor in a 3/4" pose. These photographs are like calling cards for actors and other performers.

When you go out on an audition you must bring casting photos. In many cases, mangers and agents send these photos to casting directors and producers to develop initial interest in their clients. Agents and managers receive casting notices on a daily basis, which helps them decide which of their clients to send out for the different parts. When your agent feels you're right for a part, he will send your photo to the casting director for review. If there is any interest, you will get a call to audition.

Leave a Lasting Impression with Casting Photos

Many times the secret to getting called back for a second audition is leaving a lasting impression on casting directors and producers. These people see so many different actors for the same part that they all run together in one desperate mass. If you want to stand out in the crowd, you need casting photos that are unique and accurate. The last thing you want to do is send out a photo that looks nothing like you. This is a surefire way to ensure that you don't get a callback for a part.

In this day and age many agencies and management companies post headshots on their official websites. This is an also excellent marketing tool for people without representation as casting directors can view these photos without going through a third-party. I know many people who have gotten work by posting their headshots online. Some headshot photographers even provide their clients with digital photography options. This allows you to upload you photos immediately, and also helps to cut back on processing and printing fees.
