Employee Background Checks

by Jeremy Horelick

Employee background checks are often just as helpful in civil inquiries as they are in criminal ones. When most people think of background checks, they picture employers, detectives, and jealous lovers digging up dirt on their subjects' most unsavory doings. As it turns out, there are just as many companies that perform employee background checks to learn more about their future hires' character issues.

If a subject owes back taxes or child-support payments, these are the types of things a civil background check can uncover. There may have been no crime committed, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a subject hasn't conducted him or herself unethically. This is more than enough to give any hiring party a degree of pause.

How Civil Employee Background Checks Can Bail You Out

Most reasonable people would agree that a CEO looking to hire a CFO to run his or her company's finances ought to be privy to that candidate's past financial dealings. That means things such as UCC filings and personal bankruptcies should be brought to light, especially in cases where a candidate isn't forthcoming with details. This is doubly the case in the post-Enron era, as every corporation's books are open to scrutiny.

There's no guarantee that employee background checks will help stem future malfeasance on the part of employees. All they can do is tip you off in advance to the potential for such problems. At the same time, it's possible that an otherwise clean applicant can commit his or her first transgressions under your watch, in which case all the background information in the world is moot. Mostly, though, employee background checks reveal consistent behaviors over time and are therefore reliable diagnostic tools.
