Bad Breath Cure

by Patricia Tunstall

A bad breath cure depends on the source of halitosis, but assuming it is in the mouth, a good regimen to treat mouth odors can work wonders. The American Dental Association (ADA) maintains an informative website, as do other medical groups, that lays out in easy-to-understand language just what is involved in keeping your mouth healthy. Your dentist is your local expert in oral hygiene and can examine your mouth to determine the cause of halitosis and recommend a bad breath cure.

In general, there are two major causes of bad breath: plaque buildup and gum disease. Dentists can treat both and establish a dental routine for you that will prevent future halitosis. When you consider that plaque begins to stick to your teeth 20 minutes after you finish eating, you can see why toothbrushing is a prime weapon against plaque.

A Simple Bad Breath Cure

First comes plaque, then calculus (tartar) that adheres to this sticky substance to build on your teeth and around your gumline. At this stage, gum disease starts, halitosis begins to develop, and some gum pain might be evident. Often, dental patients complain of swollen or bleeding gums. Dentists then need to use scaling and cleaning to restore dental health.

In addition to brushing, the ADA and dentists strongly advocate flossing. Not only does this process remove bits of food that toothbrushes cannot get to, but it also removes plaque that builds between the teeth. A simple bad breath cure includes brushing at least twice a day in the morning and at night, and flossing regularly after eating. A variety of dental care products are available from your dentist, and specialty products are available online.
