Stone Sculptures

Written by Serena Berger

Stone sculptures and accents make perfect finishing touches for a variety of gardens. Whether your taste runs toward the lush and classical or it's slightly more minimalist and Zen, you can find stone sculptures that will enhance your design scheme. In some cases, you can purchase copies of famous art works in stone, but for those who would prefer a sculpture designed specifically for landscaping or gardening, the choices are even more varied.

Accenting Your Garden with Stone Sculptures

Stone benches are among the most popular stone works for larger gardens or landscaped lawns. For an impeccably manicured feel, you can get a perfectly cut white stone bench; for a more earthy and natural feel, you could get a gray or brown stone bench to blend in with the landscaping but also offer a place to sit and take in the beauty of your garden. Some people choose to commemorate the loss of a beloved pet in their home gardens, using a stone bench or engraved marker as a memorial.

Small engraved stone sculptures have become increasingly popular and widely available in just the last few years or so. Some feature proverbs or favorite scripture passages, while others feature old adages about gardens. There are also stones which look like plain rocks on one side, but on the other, the have a single word like "protection," or "love." Some people put these stones face up for everyone to see; other gardeners put them face down and cherish the little secret that only they know is in their gardens.

Dramatic statues or stone works can be a lovely accent if you are fortunate enough to have a large garden, or if you entire lawn is your horticultural passion. If the thought of the Venus de Milo jutting out from an arbor on your property seems more ridiculous than elegant, never fear--there are beautiful fountains, birdbaths, rain catchers and statues which are designed specifically for outdoor settings, and they come in all sizes. While a fountain, in particular, can be an exquisite focal point for a garden, you can also use smaller statues to accent and catch the eye as pleasant surprises, though your flowers or vegetables will still be the primary focus of the garden.
