Burlington Massage

by Stacy Chbosky

If you know someone who is trying to quit smoking, massage can help. Many people feel that smoking cigarettes is a way of suppressing unpleasant emotions. As a friend of mine who quit smoking a few years ago puts it, you are literally creating a smoke screen between you and your feelings when you smoke cigarettes.

Burlington Massage and Emotional Balance

Massage can be an extremely healthy way to deal with the surprising emotions that erupt when they are no longer being smoked away. Of course, massage can also help palliate some of the aggression and irritability that may arise in the first few weeks of withdrawal. However, my feeling is that withdrawal only takes weeks, while regaining emotional balance can take years.

So many people gain weight when they quit smoking. The widely-accepted belief is that people are replacing one oral fixation with another. Personally, I don't buy it. If it was only a matter of oral fixation, ex-smokers would fall prey to lollipops and chewing gum, not cheeseburgers and french fries.

Overeating is a notorious form of stuffing down feelings. Again, it is a form of temporary emotional control. Rather than eating or smoking your sadness, fear, or anger away, I suggest you massage it away. Massage can actually remove negative memories and emotions. Eating or smoking can only bury those same feelings temporarily.
