Applicant Background Information

by Jill Morrison

Applicant background information is readily available to employers through background screening services. Many of these services are now offered online for quick and convenient access to records. Personal information about applicants is only available to employers. Employers must notify applicants in writing before seeking background checks. Applicants must also submit written consent to employers before they will be allowed to perform background checks.

How Employers Use Applicant Background Information

Employers may choose to obtain background checks if they are particularly concerned with hiring trustworthy employees. Even a simple identity check can reveal whether or not an applicant has been truthful about their identity. Identity checks verify names with addresses, home phone numbers, average incomes, average home prices, and birth dates. They are very easy to obtain because this information can be found in public records.

Criminal checks are also easy for employers to obtain because they too can be accessed in public records. Many companies require criminal screening for all applicants. Others simply choose these checks out of safety concerns for their existing employees and concerns about reputation. Criminal background checks are especially important for positions that interact with disabled individuals, the elderly, or children. Education and trucking professions are examples of professions that commonly use criminal checks for hiring purposes.

Some professions require a more extensive screening process for hiring. Background checks are available that can list all sorts of valuable information about potential employees. Detailed background checks reveal character traits, general reputations, and personal characteristics. They also list information about properties, criminal activities, judgments, relatives, bankruptcies, tax liens, and more. Background checks may be more expensive and may take longer to access since they offer such detailed information about applicants.Depending on the job, though, such in-depth checks may be well-worth the initial cost.
