Spiritual Transformation

by Elizabeth Rose

Spiritual Transformation is among the highest goals for those interested in personal development. There are other goals, of course, but understanding and contact with the ultimate or perhaps you might call it "God," has always been a primary focus for the philosophically inclined. Although pursuit of this goal is generally held to be appealing and worthwhile, the path is not for everyone.

Steps Towards Spiritual Transformation

Throughout the history of humanity, we have always sought to understand our origins. Many religions, theories, philosophies and spiritual practices have evolved to attempt to answer our questions and resolve our longing for knowledge. Like a child looking for her lost parent, individuals can pursue this goal for a lifetime, just as humanity has pursued it over the centuries. There are many stages in this journey, however.

Before you can pursue a lofty goal successfully, you must first secure the basic necessities of life. As life has become less filled with the constant tasks that insure survival--largely due to technology--the culture at large has gained more time. You can spend it playing video games or you can engage the spiritual questions. But no matter which end of the spectrum you choose, you must first be eating regularly, have some kind of engagement with the world of others--generally work--and be fairly well-adjusted psychologically.

If any of these prerequisites aren't met, they will inevitably turn up on a path of spiritual transformation. After all, if change needs to happen, you must first have something to change. It is a common tendency to turn to the spiritual in order to ease difficulties in daily living, relationships and work. While this realm can provide some comfort in the sense of belonging to a larger whole, beyond the individual self, those seeking spiritual transformation find that what they are called on to change most often is themselves. If you enter this realm with this knowledge firmly in mind and are grounded in a community of like-minded people, the rewards can be great.
