Energetics

by Elizabeth Rose

The study of the movement of subtle forces is called energetics. What are these subtle forces? In Chinese Medicine or Acupuncture, chi is considered "energy on the point of becoming matter and matter at the point of becoming energy." Other names for this subtle force, associated with the human body and living beings in general, include: prana, orgone, magnetism, ki and many other terms. Chi used to be considered mythical by Western scientists, but as we have developed more sensitive instruments, many now theorize that it is somewhat related to electricity or behaves in a manner similar to aspects of particle physics.

Why Is The Study of Energetics Important?

Because the type of energy studied in this instance is related to living beings and therefore to the life force itself, the study of energetics is important because it helps us understand ourselves. Energetics gives us clues as to how systems and individuals become well or sick. By studying systems of energetics that have worked well for centuries, as well as modern methods that have been developed by scientific principles, we can have more control of our well-being.

Since the study of energetics is, ultimately, the study of the interconnected web of life, ideally it also leads to greater compassion for others as well as the Self. In most Eastern systems of energetics, chi is seen as permeating and making up the body. The field of energy extends out from the body and therefore, interacts with others. You may be able to relate to this if you recall being in the presence of someone who left you feeling upbeat as well as times when you were with someone who might have made you feel drained and tired. Chances are, the feeling started when you came within a few feet of the person or entered a room that was permeated with their energy. You might not even have to interact with them. Sometimes this effect can linger in a room, even when physical people aren't present. People visiting the scene of a crime, for instance, can often detect a sense of fear or they feel uneasy.

Knowledge is power and being able to tell why you are feeling something can give you options for dealing with it. Stress is a high indicator of developing a disease or illness, if you are constantly exposed. If you know that someone or something in your environment is energetically unhealthy for you, there are steps you can take to keep yourself well. You can address any issue that may be present between you, leave the room, take steps to transform the situation (such as giving a depressed or upset person a compliment or offering assistance) or many other options. With medical personnel, a sensitivity to the qualities of energy can even offer the opportunity to assess a potential for disease later in life and take preventative steps.
