Foreign marriage agencies are the matchmakers of the modern era. They take information from men in North America and information from women in Eastern Europe or Asia and try to put them together. Unlike standard dating services, though, their intention for those they put together is marriage.

Russian and Ukrainian women have become the most popular potential brides among foreign marriage agencies that work with men in America. However, most foreign marriage services like to say that Russian and Ukrainian women are interested in American men for relatively the same reason that the American men are interested in them, they offer something different than members of the opposite sex in their native countries. This fact is, of course, debatable, but most agencies are keen on saying that women from Eastern Europe expect a man to be the head of a household, and that these women have no desire to compete with their husbands. Sending Letters Through Foreign Marriage Agencies

Most agencies tell their clients that the first letter they send to women overseas is very important. It is the thing that will either get the woman interested or cause her to look elsewhere. Agencies suggest that a person writes a letter of at least 1,200 words. They say anything less will not give the woman anything to work with. Some agencies will even give men ideas for topics to cover in the letter, but most just urge men to say something about themselves and show interest in the woman's life and culture. These are very basic things, but agencies say that the majority of women who like a man's first letter will ask to meet him.

Some men enter the process thinking that if they simply offer women money, those women will be on the next flight to America. Every agency strictly states that men are not to offer money in the letter. They can send simple gifts like flowers or chocolate, but not money. Offering to buy a bride is seen as an insult, but is also raises many legal issues, as well.
