Marriage services, for most Americans, tend to conjure images of the distant past, or at least images of old Broadway musicals. People picture a woman running around a village trying to make the perfect match for everyone. Perhaps, fixing up seven brides with seven brothers in the process.

Despite what many people might think, marriage services are still alive and well. In many cases, they are even thriving. There are, of course, online dating services that are descendants of the old matchmakers, but there are services that deal strictly in the business of marriage, as well.

Using a Professional Marriage Service

When most people talk about using a marriage service they are talking about signing up with an agency that will introduce them to women in other countries who have the desire to get married and come to live in America. The generic term for these women seems to be "Russian mail order brides," but they come from a number of countries, and they cannot simply be ordered from a catalog and flown over to the United States, as many people believe. The couple will meet, at first by letter, email, or phone, and then in person before marriage is even discussed.

There are those who question the process of using a marriage service for any number of reasons. However, there are many men and women who have met through such services that profess to be happy after years of marriage. The divorce rate is actually much lower for married couples that meet through an international marriage service than the overall divorce rate among Americans. These services are not for everybody, but they do offer people who simply cannot meet people another option.
