Russian mail order brides have come to represent, for many, the ideal spouse. Men imagine a woman who will be beautiful, smart, understanding, and everything they could ever hope for. The assumption that Russian mail order brides are like Stepford wives is simply wrong. Even the assumption that Russian mail order brides can simply be ordered through the mail is wrong. Russian women that use marriage services to meet American men are generally well educated, often come from the middle class, and might be just as annoyed by grown men who play video games as American women seem to be. A Russian marriage agency will allow a man to send letters to several Russian girls who have expressed interest in marrying American men. If his letters are responded to positively, he can either talk to the woman on the phone, or arrange a trip to Russia to meet her. If he decides on the latter, he might leave Russia engaged-to-be-married.

There is a chance, however, that the Russian girl will not be interested. If this occurs, the man can continue to send letters to other women, in the hope that they will respond differently. It is foolish to think that finding a bride through a marriage service is anything like meeting a woman in the States, but it is also foolish for a man to assume that the Russian women who use marriage services will be exactly what he is looking for.
