How GPS Fleet Tracking Works

While the details may be hard to understand, the basic system is simple. Onboard units on the vehicles in your fleet use signals they receive from a network of 24 satellites to calculate the location of all your vehicles over time, which provides enough information to also calculate their speeds. You therefore have a continuous record of all the vehicles in your fleet.

After calculating a vehicle's speed and location, an onboard vehicle unit does one of two things. In more expensive systems, it immediately transmits this information to your computer so you can monitor your fleet in real time. In cheaper systems, like the popular, Travel Eyes 2, the unit keeps a record of the vehicle's activity to be downloaded later.
