Corporate executives need to know what is going on in their company to make the right decision. In order to achieve this goal they must have information systems in place that gather, store, and provide the necessary information. Understanding how the company is performing internally and externally will allow executives to lead the company in the right direction. Executive information systems range from very simple to rather complex and companies will have a little of both.

Executive Information System Tools

The most basic information system includes tools such as a desk, notepad, files, and filing cabinet. One may not consider their desk as an information system tool, they do however provide storage space for files and allow users to read and write reports. In this ever complicated world of technology the simplest tools often get overlooked.

Personal tools such as a PDA or cell phone can be used in an information system. Cell phones allow users to maintain contact with colleagues and share ideas. A PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) can keep an executive informed of appointments and important dates. They can also be used, along with cell phones, to receive and send e-mail.

The most complicated tools for executive information systems include analytical software and data warehouses. Analytical software has allowed executives to access a broad base of data and perform quick and efficient analysis. Data warehouses can store the loads of data an enterprise creates. These tools are used over networks to facilitate the free flow of information and ideas from clerk to executive.
