Fat And Metabolism

by Rachel Arieff

Fat and metabolism are directly related. Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. Calories are burned every hour of your life, whether you're exercising or fast asleep. As long as an organism is alive, metabolism will occur. The relationship between fat and metabolism is basically this: slow metabolisms burn less fat, and high metabolisms burn more.

Thus, people with fast metabolisms tend to be thin, whereas folks with slow metabolisms may gain weight easily and struggle with obesity. It is interesting to see the difference in fat between different cultures of the globe. In some indigenous societies of Africa and Asia, in which fresh foods and physical activity are basic to the lifestyle, metabolic rates are well regulated and the people are generally uniformly healthy, neither too fat nor too thin.

Regulating Fat and Metabolism

However, metabolic equilibrium is elusive to many people in developed countries, due to the predominantly sedentary lifestyle and poor diet choices that slow down metabolism and cause weight gain. Thus, though some folks do struggle with an overly active metabolism, the majority of people in modern society are spending time, effort and money trying to increase their metabolic rates and thereby lose weight.

It should come as no surprise, then, that the best way to increase metabolic rates safely and effectively, with long-term results, is through diet and exercise. Exercise gets the heart rate going, cleanses the body of built-up toxins, and increases calorie burning. It also helps to regulate the appetite. After exercise, real, authentic sensations of hunger are more thoroughly satisfied, curbing overeating and helping weight loss.
