The history of golf is a long and distinguished one. Though it is difficult to trace an exact history of the game and its evolution through time, the story of golf goes back a long way. In the days of the Roman Empire a game resembling modern day golf was popular among the citizens, and it is believed that Caesar himself was a fan. Talk about a distinguished lineage!

Other nations throughout history also played golf-like games, but golf is most noted for its Scottish origins. Golf was so popular in medieval Scotland that the government worried that people playing golf would neglect more practical skills, like archery. The parliament even enacted a law that made it illegal to play golf on Sundays so that citizens would spend that day practicing their archery, a much more valuable skill in homeland defense.

Golf as we recognize it today owes a debt to St. Andrews. This is the oldest golf club in the world. Scots and people from around the world have been shooting the links here for centuries, all the way back to the fifteen hundreds. St. Andrews as we know it today was founded in the middle of the eighteenth century.

By the latter part of the 19th century, golf had made its way to North America. It appeared first in Canada and then in the United States. In the 1880s and 1890s, golf courses began to pop up across the United States. Now, just over 100 years later, golf is one of the most popular sports in the country and golf courses can be found in every state.

The game of golf itself is known not only for being an enjoyable recreational activity, but also for being incredibly frustrating. Beginning golfers often experience tremendous frustration when they first play the game. This can be avoided, however, with proper training and practice. The frustration beginning golfers feel is because they have not mastered golfing techniques.

Golf Technique and Equipment

Golf is a game of precision, skill, control, and power. More than other sports, you must master the fundamental techniques of golf in order to succeed and enjoy the game. Golf technique requires players to perfect aspects of stance, grip, and swing. The way you set up to the ball is half the battle. Your stance must be comfortable and you must squarely address the call or your shot will go astray. Knees should be flexed a little and your hands should be directly over the ball while utilizing proper grip.

Once you've set up, next comes the swing. Your backswing should be smooth and start out straight behind the ball. Your club head needs to travel backwards from the ball in a straight line for a few inches before it begins to come up. Use your left arm (for right handed hitters) as a guide. Allow your wrists to cock naturally and let your lower body lead during the downswing.

Of course the equipment you use is also important. A good set of clubs will help you hit well and consistently. There are many training aids you can use that will help you develop proper technique and get the most out of your equipment. The Internet is a great source of training tips and the best place to buy training aids. A few private lessons wouldn't hurt either, if you can afford them.
