Lighting Fixtures

Written by Dina Kayed

I often think about whether taste really is inherited along with good genes, or simply bought at a store using a plastic credit card. Regardless of endless debates on this issue, I would say it's probably a mix of both, with a drop of light coming in at the right angle. The right lighting can have a tremendous impact on any home, making even simple settings look palatial or adding sophistication wherever it's needed.

We all have a tendency to overlook the influence of light on our lives. This is a shame. It can, for example, have a great effect on how we perceive color. The color of furniture changes depending on the amount of light in a room. Things don't seem as bright as they should if the lights are too dim. At the same time, if too much sunlight is allowed in, the natural color of furniture might fade. Light fixtures help solve such a dilemma as they can be adjusted to the right level at the flick of a switch.

Effect of Light on Our Emotions

Light can produce specific emotions; it can make us happy, or sadden our mood and so on. Lighting is well known to be a prime ingredient in creating a romantic atmosphere, for example. Imagine yourself sitting in a room without sufficient light; the kinds of emotions this room will arouse are likely to be sad or sleepy ones. On the other hand, sitting in a room that's illuminated well with great lighting fixtures will enhance positive feelings such as happiness and enthusiasm.

This phenomenon is due to the fact that light affects the way we see objects around us. A room might seem smaller if the light is too dim or larger if the light is strong and bright. Space is a perceived experience. If a room seems too narrow due to the effects of lighting, it could, for example, cause a person to have recall of unpleasant experiences such as the memory of being stuck in an elevator. The right lighting will call up pleasant experiences.

Home Decor and Lighting Fixtures

We all perceive are homes as our private getaways. Because they tend to reflect our personalities, homes have a habit of bringing out the best or the worst of our hidden talents concerning home decorating. Furniture will not always allow us to create the effect we're after. In addition, it can be a very expensive way of creating a given effect.

Lighting fixtures, on the other hand, don't take up much space and are generally easy on the budget. They can enhance any atmosphere you're trying to create for your home. A simple chandelier with candle lights can instantly give a Victorian effect, while spot lighting is generally better suited to a modern setting. Whether you like classic, period, or stark modern, you can find exactly the right type of lighting to underline your decorating style.

Lighting for Business

People tend to interact with the environment around them. It's not just about the kind of information you feed them, but where and how you present those ideas. Business deals can be very tricky, so making your clients feel comfortable may affect the outcome of a business transaction. The right setting that's accented with appropriate lighting can go a long way to creating the right business atmosphere.

Light fixtures in their many shapes and forms help present business ideas better, by providing the brightness needed in a room to see clearly or simply to add a professional and organized feeling around the office. Picture lights, for example, will help draw clients' attention to the company's achievements hanging on the wall, being a constant reminder of how well you can do. Making sure you have the right kind of light for the task will improve everyone's productivity. Being able to see well, however, is only part of the equation. Creating the right atmosphere is key to productivity and lighting is an important part of that.
