Parking Lot Security

Written by Serena Berger

In cities, parking lots are typically reserved for employees of and visitors to specific building. If parking is not available on the streets, however, many drivers will park in a lot that is reserved for a workplace. This can create problems for your employees and potential clients who may decide to go elsewhere when they are unable to find parking nearby.

As a solution, many companies issue permits to their employees, either in the form of plastic tags that can be hung from the rearview mirror or adhesive stickers that can be applied to the windshield. These allow parking lot security officers to identify the cars easily which belong in the lot on a regular basis. Even so, there is still the problem of differentiating authorized visitors from those that are simply looking for a place to park.

If you own the parking lot and want to increase its security, you could mark off a section as being reserved for visitors and place a restriction on the amount of time which a car can be parked there. Still, an attendant must enforce these time limits and may not recall when each car entered the lot. Another problem might be that someone who visited earlier in the week decides to hold on to the visitor pass that they had been issued at the time and use the parking lot again.

Parking permits are available that change over time, making their expiration evident. This will prohibit visitors from using old passes as a means of parking in reserved spots. In addition, such a simple parking permit system will enable your security staff to do their job without being consumed by tracking the time at which cars entered and exited.
