Jungle Records

by Charles Peacock

Jungle is one of the hardest (and most complex) types of electronic dance music. Characterized by incredibly fast beats and driving basslines, jungle is not for everyone. For people who really like to let it all out on the dance floor, however, jungle beats are just right.

History of Jungle

Jungle is a unique type of electronic music in that it was one of the first forms to develop almost entirely outside of the United States. In the early '90s, British musicians and DJs began combining super-fast hip hop and house beats with reggae and R&B basslines. The resulting style was dubbed "jungle," after the London club of the same name where many of the earliest jungle tracks were heard.

Jungle is now also commonly known as drum 'n bass, and there really isn't a difference between the two (although drum 'n bass is the more commonly accepted term today). Like other types of electronic dance music, jungle has continued to evolve and has both borrowed from and been influenced by other styles. Where the earliest jungle tracks were primarily instrumental, today you can find jungle records that contain vocals--there are even jungle remixes of Top 40 hits.

Jungle records are not difficult to find, although you might have a hard time if you're looking in a local record shop. Like other types of dance records, jungle records are usually only stocked by shops or online retailers that specialize in dance music. These days, the best variety or new and old jungle LPs can be found on the Internet.
