Personal Protection Devices
Taser Stun GunsTaser stun guns are one of the most effective options for those looking to incapacitate intruders or attackers. The appeal of Tasers is that they completely shut down their targets without inflicting any long term damage. To do this, they dump an enormous amount of electrical information into the nervous system, which can do one of several things. The charges emitted by Tasers do in fact have a high voltage, but they also have rather low amperage. Consequently, a Taser supplies a high-pressure shock that interferes with the signals being sent and received by the body's CNS (central nervous system). This can either confuse the body's own electrical impulses and effectively "short-circuit" it, or it can sap the body of its energy stores. Either way, the outcome for the victim is more or less the same. The Finer Points of StunningThe signal sent via Taser stun gun is often done so from a pulse frequency that's built into the machine itself. The current dumped into the assailant's body is almost identical to that of his or her body's natural electrical activity. He or she is therefore unable to distinguish internally generated charges from externally generated ones. This confusion literally speeds up the body, for it knows it's being called upon to perform something, only it's not sure what. As a result, it shuts down altogether. There are some Taser stun guns that send electrical signals to do a specific kind of work. Namely, this involves contracting the muscles to such a degree that the target is forced into a curled ball. Obviously, achieving this requires a significant jolt, albeit a low-intensity one, to the CNS, which is exactly what Tasers are designed to do. ![]() Get all Home Security articles via
