Personal Protection Devices
Pepper Spray BatonsPepper spray batons are popular not only for their effectiveness in fending off attackers, but for their ease of use as well. Batons range anywhere from a couple of inches to roughly half a foot in length and are only three-quarters of an inch to an inch in diameter. As a result, they fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, whether you're the proverbial "little old lady" or a hulking bodyguard. Some pepper spray batons attach directly to your keychain for even greater convenience. Thieves and muggers tend to seek out soft targets, and there are few moments of greater vulnerability than when entering one's house or car. Pepper spray batons are thus "at the ready" as you walk through parking garages or along dimly lit residential neighborhoods. As If That Weren't Enough...Many pepper spray canisters also come with key flails that may be wielded against enemies for even greater protection. Most often, assailants will never get close enough after feeling the business end of two million Scoville Heat Units (SHUs) to warrant their use, but it's hardly worth taking the risk. In the heat of battle, some determined assailants are able to withstand punishing abuse, which is why your rugged key flail is there for back-up. Striking distances vary from baton to baton, but most are designed to be used in fairly close proximity, such as a range of two or three feet. Of course, the greater the distance between your baton's nozzle and your attacker, the greater the area of diffusion for the pepper. Hence, even if you're eight feet away from your subject, the cloud your pepper spray emits will be strong enough to repel him, at least temporarily. ![]() Get all Home Security articles via
