The most essential parts of a lawn mower are the engine and the mower deck. Without these, the mower doesn't mow, and is of limited use. However, so long as you have your engine and deck, the rest of the mower can be modified or accessorized as you see fit. There are a number of accessories that can be bought for your mower, and they have various effects on the mowing experience.

Picking out Mower Accessories

Lawn mower accessories come in all shapes and sizes. Many are additions to the standard rider mower, such as canopies to protect you from the sun or a roll cage to protect the driver should the mower tip. These add-ons tend to be more expensive, since they need be attached to the main body of the mower and may require modifications to secure them.

Other accessories are simply improvements on the standard mower parts. Whether bigger tires or more comfortable seats, these tend to be more reasonably priced accessories, since they are simply replacing similar parts. Often, these modifications are easier to make after purchase, since they don't require any difference in the body of the mower.

Finally, some lawn mower accessories are dragged behind the mower. These include water rollers, chain stripers, seed spreaders, and soil aerators. They are separate pieces of machinery that simply hook to the back of your mower, and are powered (if need be) by the motion of the wheels as the accessory is towed. These are usually compatible with any mower, and are rarely needed by most people. Because of these factors, this kind of accessory is usually rented.
