Hiring Techniques

by Amy Hall

Some hiring techniques obviously work better than others. Placing an advertisement in the classified section of your local Sunday paper may get noticed, but it likely won't attract the highly qualified candidates you want. Actually, what you will probably experience is a high volume of phone calls from people who think they have the skills they need to get the job you are trying to fill.

Of course, you would have no way of really knowing any of this until you actually meet with these job seekers face to face in the job interview. As you begin shooting off your questions that are intended to provoke thoughtful answers, you might actually get the most absurd answers under the sun. In fact, you may actually sit there scratching your head wondering what happened to the candidate you spoke with on the phone the other day, who claimed to be computer proficient and in possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college.

Turns out that the candidate can barely handle word processing, and in actuality only has an Associate's Degree in animal training. The last time you checked, you were hiring for a management position for a software company. Confused, you thank the candidate, for what you are not sure, and say your goodbyes. Alone at your desk, you re-read the resumé, pretty sure it says the person has a Bachelor's Degree in information technology. Oh well, upward and onward you move.

Hiring Techniques That Work

If the above sounds too familiar, you may need to adjust your hiring techniques in order to get positive results. First, it may be beneficial to you to link up with an online recruitment agency that can sift through the thousands of resumés for you. Then, you can view video clips and resumés of qualified candidates that truly are qualified, and who don't just claim to be so. There is a big difference, as you well know.
