Brass Knuckles For Sale

by Nicholas Kamuda

Modern brass knuckles, or knucks, are instruments that date back to the first half of the last century. While predecessors to modern brass knuckles do exist, the design of the weapon remains much the same as it was during the First World War.

During the war, the most common instrument for the application of brass knuckles was on a trench knife. The Mark I knife, called a "knuckle duster trench knife," included individual guards for every finger on the knife handle. Each guard was subtly pointed, allowing the knife to be a defensive tool as well as an offensive weapon.

Modern Types of Brass Knuckles

Modern knucks, which are meant for collectors, often lack both the blade and the pointed finger guards of the Mark I. Contemporary designers opt for an angled silhouette instead. Also, the back of the knucks--the part that fits against your palm--is usually curved, allowing for greater ergonomic comfort and a more pleasing aesthetic.

Brass and steel remain the most popular material for constructing the knucks, but new variations have also been introduced. Though it renders the items less effective as paperweights, aluminum is one popular alternative. Other variations have also been introduced for collectors. One popular design features an extremely simplified shape that is rendered in heavy duty plastic and available as a keychain.
