Telescoping Batons

by Nicholas Kamuda

Telescoping batons, as tactical tools, offer strong defensive capability and great offensive power. In addition, they are legal in many states, making them easy to obtain and carry. Designed with no sharp edges, and collapsible to around ten inches, they are easy to carry and make great self-defense tools.

Many law enforcement agencies are currently using telescoping batons as the self-defense weapon of choice. The same models that police use--all of the strength, power, and convenience-- are available for civilian use as well. Many people consider them easier to use without training than a knife, knuckle, or other self-defense weapon.

Common Features of Telescoping Batons

Though different manufacturers have different products on the market, telescoping batons are commonly available in three sizes, a small, medium, and large size. ASP, perhaps the most popular manufacturer of telescoping batons, has 16, 21, 26, 31-inch models available. The 16 and 21-inch models, which collapse to 6 1/4" and 7 3/4" inches, respectively, is the most common with civilians. Larger models, such as the 26-inch model, which is nearly 10 inches long when collapsed, may be more appropriate for professional uses than civilian self-defense.

The batons, which are made from precision-engineered steel, are strong enough to withstand almost any kind of impact without buckling or breaking. They expand at the flick of the wrist, and many retract with a simple tap. Their lightweight design makes them easy to handle, even for untrained users.
