Personal Safety Alarms

by Nicholas Kamuda

Personal alarms operate as great deterrents to would-be muggers and assaulters. They are small, lightweight, and easy to carry. Their size and shape makes the perfect for stowing in purses, book bags, or even in pockets.

Most are activated similar to how a sonic grenade might operate. If the small chain or strap attached to alarm is removed, the alarm sounds. This simple operation allows them to be sounded instantly and without thought.

Other Uses of Personal Safety Alarms

Some personal alarms can also be used as door alarms. They can pick up subtle vibrations through the doorknob fixture and sound if disturbed. Both personal alarms and door alarms generally sound at levels of 120 or 130 decibels, which is loud enough to attract attention even in noisy areas such as dense urban centers.

Some alarms also feature flashing lights to attract attention. The light, a high-powered strobe that flashes an attention-grabbing bright white light, is built into the housing of the alarm. The addition of a strobe makes the alarm perfect for use in a window of other environment where visual alerts might work better than audio alerts.
