In many organizations, email usage policies have no more importance than stop signs located in abandoned towns. Sure, the policies are there, but nobody reads them or cares what they say. This can be especially dangerous for public sector and government organizations, where security and confidentiality are of utmost importance.

Email Tracking for Information Security

Organizations like the CIA, FBI, and the United States Armed Forces already utilize email tracking software. Not too long ago, a few soldiers stationed in Guantanamo Bay were accused of sending confidential information to unauthorized people. Using email tracking software, Army officials found suspicious messages being sent from these soldiers' accounts. If the military did not have the ability to monitor emails, espionage and intelligence leaking would most likely become commonplace.

Imagine the damage it would cause if the CIA had no way of monitoring their employees' emails. Of course, the intelligence agencies and the military use tracking software for more important purposes than other organizations. However, these programs work similarly for anyone who uses them. If tracking software helps the United States Army keep its intelligence secure, couldn't it protect health care companies from sending confidential information to the wrong people?

In both the private and public sectors, the majority of employees have good intentions. Security problems occur due to the small percentage of people who have malignant agendas and the many workers who genuinely do not believe they have done anything wrong, even when they have. Email tracking helps organizational leaders educate the employees who do not know better and punish the people who intentionally cause harm.
