Training And Development

by Serena Berger

Training and development are essential tools if you are planning on finding leaders from within your own company. It can be difficult to hire new employees and place them in supervisory positions. Though they may have the skills necessary to supervise your employees and complete assigned tasks, they may not be familiar with your company, its vision, and its culture.

Training and Developing Your New Hires

An alternative is to implement a training and development program under which your current employees receive training so that they can progress in your organization. Such programs serve many purposes, including allowing you to keep your best employees from seeking alternate employment. A common reason that many employees will look for another job is that they do not feel that they have advancement potential with their current company.

A training and development program will allow your superior employees to assume managerial positions. Not only will they feel more valued and be rewarded for their performance when selected to receive training and development, but you will also gain a group of mentors that can assist and mentor the next generation. Such a program does not need to be formalized, as mentoring can be a fairly informal and be a mutually rewarding process.

Retaining your current employees is ultimately less costly than hiring new ones who must be retrained. Providing comprehensive training and development over many months or even years allows employees to gain new skills that will benefit both them and your company. Employees may ultimately decide to move on to another company with the skills that they have developed--but while they work for you, your company will benefit from their hard work.
