Menopause Supplements

by Norene Anderson

Menopause supplements are bringing welcome relief to millions of women living through the symptoms of menopause. Many health-conscious women prefer to treat the symptoms with natural supplements rather than with prescription hormone relief therapy. Some simple things that will help regardless of the treatment are plenty of exercise, eating a balanced diet, and adequate rest.

One major supplement that is needed during and after menopause is calcium. Without adequate amounts of calcium, women are at high risk for osteoporosis. The loss of bone density is responsible for thousands of broken hips and other bone fractures. If you are in peri-menopause or post-menopause, you should have a bone density test to determine if you are consuming enough calcium to support good bone health.

Many Menopause Supplements

Some plants are rich in phytoestrogens and are shown to reduce some of the symptoms experienced during menopause. Plants such as red clover or soy are two of the most familiar used for this purpose. It is also thought that these plants have the added benefit of sustaining healthy bones. Black cohosh is a plant that is native to America and it has no estrogenic action. Research has indicated it is effective in relieving many of the menopausal symptoms.

There are many menopause supplements to choose from. If you are suffering from any of the usual symptoms such as hot flashes, fatigue, depression, weight gain, or any other symptom that is not normal for you, check with your healthcare provider. You should have a complete checkup for any underlying disease or illness before beginning a regimen of supplements. Your physician will be able to guide you to the type of supplement that is best for you.
