Nursing Education Requirements

Nursing education requirements for an MSN vary from one institution to another in name, but the basic information is the same. A sample of core requirements includes courses such as disease prevention, research processes, legal and ethical issues, and advanced theoretical foundations. Other courses may include research processes or health promotion.

For a specialty in nursing education, additional courses of nursing education theories, patient education, concepts, and other courses are required. For an MA in community health education, other courses are mandatory including health psychology and community roles. Independent study is also a part of many advanced degree programs. Many of these degrees are offered online.

More Nursing Education Requirements

Nursing education requirements are different for obtaining a BSN. After all general education requirements are met, the nursing education focuses on general aspects of nursing with a wide variety of exposure. Some of the courses may include issues and trends, research, nursing leadership, psychiatric nursing, or caring for critically ill patients.

The role of nurse practitioner is growing in popularity as rural areas and small communities are finding it difficult to retain adequate physician coverage. The nursing education requirements for a registered nurse to become a nurse practitioner is at the Master of Science in Nursing level and requires specific training dedicated to the specialty of nurse practitioner emphasis. Most schools require a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale for admission to the graduate nursing program.
