Analgesics

by Tara Peris

The typical chiropractic office will keep a wide variety of analgesics on hand. Whether in the form of sprays, creams, or rubs, analgesics are sometimes necessary to relieve a patient's pain in order to move forward with further treatment. Analgesic gels can also enhance ultrasounds and supplement cryotherapy.

A Wide Variety of Analgesic Formulas

Analgesics can be formulated with soothing ingredients like aloe or vitamin E. Prescribing them to patients can help with pain that occurs in between tens treatments. Analgesic creams provide relief by cooling the skin and then introducing heat to the affected area. This helps increase the blood flow to the area, which will relax tense and sore muscles.

Depending on your patient's needs, you may want to have different formulas of analgesics on hand. One popular formula contains capsaicin, which has been proven beneficial for spot therapy with arthritis, bursitis, and sports injuries. There are also spray analgesics, which can reduce stress, increase joint flexibility, and restore muscle tone.

Active ingredients range from two percent menthol to South American herbs like Ilex. Most analgesics can reduce or relieve pain for several hours. When deciding what type of analgesics to carry in your office, look for testimonials from physical therapists, doctors, or chiropractors to see what's worked for them. Sometimes, you may be able to obtain a complementary sample of a particular medicine in order to try before you buy.
