Calabasas Real Estate

by Courtney Salinas

Many Southern Californians live under stress from work, traffic, overpopulated areas and pollution. A lot of these frustrated souls are seeking refuge in more rural settings farther from the crush of the city. Calabasas, California provides residents housing close enough to downtown Los Angeles to commute, but far enough to escape.

Fun Facts About Calabasas

The name for the city of Calabasas is supposedly derived from the Spanish word "calabaza," which means squash, pumpkin or gourd. The Chumash Indian word for gourd or squash is "calahoosa" and could also represent the etymology of the city's name. Calabasas embraces this title with zest by hosting an annual Pumpkin Festival every October. The festival celebrates the arrival of fall and also helps promote local artisans and merchants.

The Pumpkin Festival last two days at the end of October and has tons of fun contests and games that attract tourists from all around Southern California. The festival is held on a movie set, believe it or not, on the Paramount Ranch. The set is an old Western town that adds to the flavor of the whole event. Live country bands, pony rides, seed-spitting and pie-eating contests, and pumpkin bowling keep tourists coming back for years and years, bringing revenue to the area.

Calabasas has a rural feel with proximity to Los Angeles, a combination most homeowners in the area desire. Downtown Calabasas gives the feel of a time past. Many of the buildings are original landmarks or restorations to commemorate the Calabasas of years past.
