Agoura Hills Real Estate

by Courtney Salinas

Despite the pastoral setting of Agoura Hills, the big city is only a 45-minute drive away. The community is situated in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, providing breathtaking scenery for Los Angeles commuters. Living in the rural setting of Agoura Hills among the foothills and canyons, residents are able to leave behind the hustle and bustle of the big city.

History of Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills is named for a European settler who came to the area in 1871 when he was 17. Don Pedro Agoure was the son of a French farmer who decided to adopt Spanish tradition and add Don to the front of his name. His original name, Pierre, was replaced with Pedro. Legend has it Agoure was a shepherd and a swashbuckler.

In 1928, Agoura Hills was known as Picture City. When the Picture City Chamber of Commerce asked for a post office, they were told to come up with a list of 10 names that the Postal Service could choose from for the name of their town. One of the choices was Agoure and the Postal Service changed the "e" at the end of Agoure to an "a" for easier pronunciation.

Water shortages had been a concern for Agoura Hills for a long time. In 1959, the Las Virgines Municipal Water District was formed to meet the water demands of the community. By 1963, water from the Colorado River began to arrive in Agoura Hills and provided not only drinking water, but also a means for fire protection.
