Agoura Hills Homes

by Courtney Salinas

Agoura Hills has a rural feel that is hard to find in over populated Los Angeles County. The sheer density of people in the county creates such a demand for housing that conditions throughout the county are usually cramped. Agoura Hills is one of a few communities in Los Angeles that can provide commuters with the serenity needed to unwind but still have a direct route into the heart of the city.

Origins of Agoura Hills

The Chumash Indians were the first residents of Agoura Hills. The Chumash collected acorns, which were mashed to provide food. The Chumash also hunted game in the area and set controlled fires every 3-5 years to replenish the land. Once European explorers learned of their existence, their way of living changed forever.

Spanish explorers and Franciscan Friars began visiting the area, looking for areas to settle and establish missions. The Friars told the Chumash of Christianity and worked to convert them. Explorers traveled up and down El Camino Real, a trail that ran right through what would one day be the City of Agoura Hills.

Spanish settlers arrived in the late 1700s and permanently displaced the Chumash. With the Spaniards came ranching that carried the communities in the area through the centuries. Cattle and sheep were raised in the area that would become Agoura Hills, as well as vegetables, fruit and wheat. When the importance of ranching and farming diminished, owners began dividing their land up and selling pieces to satisfy the growing demand for housing in the Los Angeles area.
