Ventura County Homes

Ventura County has managed to escape a lot of the problems that Los Angeles County, its immediate neighbor to the south, has encountered. Los Angeles suffers from pollution and severe congestion throughout all of its inhabitable areas. Through smart planning and foresight, Ventura County has managed to avoid some of those problems.

Ventura County is still very full and populated, but not in the same way that Los Angeles County is. A smart growth plan initiated in the 1980s prohibits development of certain areas, which allows for continued farming in the area that would not have been possible otherwise. This helps Ventura County keep some of its rural qualities and also reduces pollution, which Los Angeles County suffers from severely. This healthy and improved quality of life draws new residents to Ventura County all the time.

Geography of Ventura County

Ventura County covers 2,208 square miles, 363 square miles of which are water. The large majority of the population of Ventura County lives in the southern half because the northern half is mostly rough and rugged wilderness. The southern half consists of densely populated cities and open farmland.

Ventura County has many geographical extremes. Within the county are two islands, Anacapa Island and San Nicolas Island. Ventura County also contains several amazing mountain peaks. Mount Pinos, Frazier Mountain, and Reyes Peak are all over 7,500 feet tall. The tallest is Mount Pinos at 8,831 feet. It was sacred to the Chumash Indians, who called it Iwihinmu and considered it to be the center of the universe.
