Alternative Sentencing Los Angeles

by Patricia Skinner

If you're interested in getting in on the alternative sentencing program, it's important that you first understand what it is. The purpose behind this project is to try to allow those convicted of a crime to continue with their lives as far as possible so that they don't lose their ability to work and provide for themselves and their families. This type of sentencing can also help to avoid a sense of "not belonging," which is common among those who have served jail terms. The main purpose behind the scheme is to reduce the proportion of repeat offenders, and to reduce the number of offenders who eventually "drop out of society."

Different Types of Alternative Sentencing

Some of the different options that are sometimes employed by the courts in an alternative sentencing case are split sentences, or special probation. This can involve a short prison term, or a term where the prisoner only serves weekends in jail. Different types of probation can include electronic house arrest.

Sometimes alternative sentencing will involve counseling to help the prisoner overcome personal addictions or problems that landed them in trouble with the law to start with. Drugs, alcohol, and credit cards may be involved here, and require different types of counseling. Also, some courts will advocate vocational training, on the premise that being qualified to follow a vocation after their release will reduce the likelihood of a person going on to become a repeat offender.

There are no guarantees that an offender will be accepted for inclusion in an alternative sentencing program. Many factors will be taken into account, including previous record, assessments and background investigations, and individual recommendations for the judge to consider. You will need to find an attorney who has experience with the alternative sentencing program for further advice that's specific to your case.
