X10 Home Automation

Home automation is more commonly using X10 technology for control of lighting and other electronic systems. Using the existing AC wiring in the home, appliances are plugged into receivers, which are then plugged into an outlet. They communicate with a central control system over the powerline wiring.

X10 technology has proven to be a practical and inexpensive way to network a home because it is based on the industry standard for electric wiring. An X10 receiver can be used with a wide range of electronic appliances and devices that operate when plugged into any AC outlet. And since wireless control is now the most preferred form of home automation, X10 technology has expanded to include this capability as well.

In order to keep up with the burgeoning home automation industry, X10 remote control has evolved past the point of being able to simply turn appliances on and off. Consumers now want to create their own customized commands that are capable of controlling multiple devices at the same time. But, they don't want to spend an inordinate amount of time or money doing it. That's why X10 and other home automation systems have become more streamlined and simplified.

While X10 remote control systems have long commanded a large share of the home automation industry, they have often been criticized for their unreliability and possibility for electronic interference. New technologies are now available that offer an alternative to X10 while providing similar ease of operation. They vary widely according to primary application, such as security or appliance control, as well as user interface, like voice recognition or PC software control.
