Appliance Controls

by Stephanie Dula

The ability to remotely control appliances is just one of many creative home automation tools that can be implemented to make one's everyday life a little more convenient. There are all sorts of scenarios possible when dealing with even basic appliance controls. These controls are available that will plug right into the wall, capable of transmitting and receiving signals using standard electrical circuits.

This is great news for those who may be interested in the convenience a novelty of home automation without any extra wiring needed. While smart homes have long been considered a far-off technological concept, appliance controls are now widely available and fairly simple to use. Each appliance to be automated is plugged into a control module, and then plugged into an AC outlet.

Creative Use of Appliance Controls

A central controller is used to program all appliances to turn on and off at desired times, and set specific sequences to be triggered by commands or events. For example, activation of an alarm clock can trigger the coffee pot and turn off security lights. Or, every night the garage door opening triggers the lights in the hallway and kitchen to come on, along with the stereo to play a favorite CD.

There are plenty of possibilities and lots of freedom for customization of pre-programmed sequences. Along with the installation of a home server, appliance controls provide an entire in-house network that can be interfaced with the Internet. Functions can be performed as a response to simple online commands.
