PC Controls

by Stephanie Dula

Home automation systems can include anything from a simple remote controlled garage door opener to a whole house network of appliances. They are typically operated using a remote control keypad that can be placed on a tabletop or mounted in a wall. They can also be networked and controlled through a PC with the use of specialized home management software and a computer interface module.

The use of PC controls for an automation network has many implications for remote home management enthusiasts. Systems can be accessed and monitored online through web browsers. One popular way for people to keep an eye on their home is to monitor their security cameras online. Automatic e-mails can alert home and business owners of certain events, like activation of motion sensors.

Programming with PC Controls

PC controls also give users the full range of programming possibilities of their automated devices. Users can create complex macros, or multiple functions that take place with a single command. They can also create conditional commands. For example, if no one comes home by 6:00 p.m., turn on the kitchen and living room lights, turn them off at 10:00 p.m., then switch on master bedroom lights, outside lights, and security cameras.

Many home and business owners like to use their PCs to control automation systems because they offer the familiarity of an existing media and communications manager. Simple software can add home management capability to a home PC, or a separate home server can be added. A home server can provide extra storage for digital content as well as internet sharing while still allowing a PC to act as the primary interface for the home network.
