Vietnamese Adoption

by Abby Luttrell

The Vietnamese program of adoption has been set up with a reputed government agency, and adoptions are straight-forward and well-organized. Both boys and girls are available for adoption, and have been given up for adoption because of the extreme poverty of their parents. They have had medical examinations and have been tested for HIV and Hepatitis B prior to placement. There are more boys than girls; waiting time for a boy is five to seven months, for a girl, up to fifteen months.

Travel Requirements for Vietnamese Adoption

The Vietnamese adoption program requires travelling twice to Vietnam. The first trip will be a week or less, and you will meet the child that the government agency has selected for you. The child identified for you is called a referral, and you will be sent photos and information about the child. If you accept the referral, then you will fly to Vietnam to meet the child.

The second trip will be made 42 days later when the adoption is approved. At that time, you will go through an official Giving and Receiving Ceremony and the adoption will be formalized by the Vietnamese government. Two weeks will be needed for the second trip to finalize the adoption and comply with the paperwork.

Vietnam has an age requirement which is that parents must be 20 years older than the child. Adoptive parents are ideally between the ages of 25 and 50. If you are older than 55, exceptions may be made in your case, but you will be advised to take an older child over the age of one year. Vietnamese adoption policy allows single women to adopt a child, as well as previously divorced persons.
