Futon Mattresses

by Tara Peris

These days, futon mattresses come in a good many varieties. No longer confined to a single lumpy mass, the futon has been liberated by innovative new mattress lines that extend its utility and enhance its comfort. These mattresses boast high-tech fabrics and rugged construction that keep them intact over the long haul.

If you think futon mattresses are all the same, think again. The mattress is the centerpiece of this crafty, versatile piece of furniture, and it must function well in both sitting and sleeping capacities. It must be able to withstand the weight of the masses who pile on to watch the Sunday afternoon game, while retaining its supportive form for the sleeper who follows. With this tall order in mind, designers have worked arduously to create a mattress that provides equal comfort for lounging and reclining.

All Natural Options

One of the most promising new lines integrates Tempur Pedic technology. This technology uses the foam memory mechanism to mold to the body throughout the night, creating a sounder sleep cycle. Although this innovation has been used for some time on standard bed mattresses, it has only recently been adapted for use on futon beds.

Other mattresses rely on organic materials to promote deep sleep. Building on the known benefits of high thread-count sheets, these mattresses use natural fibers to control temperature and to allow the body to breathe throughout the night. Densely packed high-grade organic cotton provides firm support that works with the natural curves of the body.
